HOT WEATHER RETURNS, TROPICS HEATING BACK UP

I hope everyone was able to enjoy the cooler weather we have had the past few days since it ends this week! A large dome of high pressure will begin to develop the next few days and really heat things up across the Eastern US. Temperatures will be well above normal and some 90s for highs could return. Meanwhile, areas in the Western US will begin seeing snow!

Notice the core of the heat is centered over the Eastern US while there is plenty of cold air bottled up in the Western US.

This warm and dry pattern looks like it will last for 7-10 days before a cold front approaches and tries to bring cooler weather our way. It remains to be seen if that will happen though but hopefully we will switch to a cooler fall pattern as we enter the first week of October.

ACTIVE TROPICS

The tropics have also really picked up in activity lately. There are 3 named systems out there right now.

First up is Jerry. An unfavorable environment will prevent Jerry from strengthening much and the only land threat will be to Bermuda. Models are taking Jerry well away from the US.

Next up is Karen. This system is very weak and struggling to survive right now. The future track of Karen is HIGHLY uncertain; models are everywhere with the potential track. Some stall it, others dissipate it and some strengthen it and send it towards the US. It will be awhile before we have an idea where Karen will go but the immediate threat is heavy rain and some gusty winds in Puerto Rico.

Finally there is Lorenzo, way out in the deep Atlantic. Lorenzo quickly formed after exiting Africa and is expected to steadily strengthen into a powerful hurricane. The good news? Lorenzo is forecast to quickly turn out to sea and would not be a threat to the US.

The tropics will likely stay active for several more weeks but should begin to slow down as we get into October. Usually October we see more of the “home grown” storms that develop in the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico or Bahamas region and those will be the hot spots we shift our focus to in the coming days. We will be sure to keep you informed of any important changes with these systems!

Try to stay cool this week as summer returns! Bring on winter!
